Jiu Jitsu (also known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or BJJ) is a martial art, combat sport and a self-defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. It is widely regarded as the world’s most effective grappling art.
Jiu Jitsu promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend himself or herself against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique—most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds. Jiu Jitsu can be trained for sport grappling tournaments (both gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self-defense. Sparring (commonly referred to as “rolling”) and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on the ability to apply Jiu Jitsu concepts and techniques against an uncooperative opponent.
In our classes, students learn how to execute and defend takedowns, escape undesirable bottom positions, perform sweeps and reversals from the bottom, execute pins and hold-downs, and advance position along the “positional hierarchy” to ultimately apply various submission holds.
In addition to being a sport and self-defense system, BJJ is a great way to improve fitness and get in shape. After a few months of training you can expect to improve your cardio, gain flexibility, get stronger and increase your agility and body awareness … all while having a great time!

Jiu Jitsu Fundamentals
We recognize that many people feel both excited and also nervous at the idea of starting Jiu Jitsu. It is with that in mind that we are happy to introduce the Jiu Jitsu Fundamentals class to our Jiu Jitsu curriculum as the perfect first class to try. This class will emphasize specific movements essential to your development in Jiu Jitsu or any other grappling art. Participants will learn to move efficiently and safely both on the ground as well as on their feet; additionally the class will cover the transitions in between standing and ground work, such as various rolls, how to fall safely, and how to get back to your feet correctly. On top of learning essential movements, students will learn fundamental grappling concepts, self defense skills, and basic BJJ techniques. More experienced students will also benefit from this style of training by engraining their fundamentals in a class that will not include much (if any) sparring – a great way to hone in your skills without the more fatiguing training that is often a part of our other BJJ classes.
Students who own a gi ("kimono") are encouraged to wear it during this class, however if you are new and do not own a gi yet, please feel free to participate without one. When training without a gi, please wear form fitting clothing without pockets, buttons, or zippers - see the No Gi pictures below for examples.
Class meets on Saturdays at 10:15 AM
No Gi Jiu Jitsu
If you are new to BJJ and do not yet have a uniform, the No Gi class is a great place to start. The majority of fundamental Jiu Jitsu techniques are applicable both with the gi and without it. However, there are some aspects of training without the gi that are unique both to sport Jiu Jitsu as well as to self defense training, making it the perfect compliment to our regular Jiu Jitsu classes. If you are ready to jump in on your first No Gi class, we suggest wearing a compression style top, and either long tights or board shorts as seen in the picture. It is best to avoid overly loose, baggy clothing.
This class meets on Mon / Fri at 6:15 PM and Wednesdays at 7:15 PM.
Our kickboxing class gives students a blend of both sport martial arts and self-defense applications, plus an overall awesome workout. With a strong emphasis on the basics and building proper technique, students of all levels can participate comfortably and know they will be improving their skills while also getting into great shape. Training sessions include a combination of shadow boxing, rounds on the Thai bag, pad work, speed work and calisthenics.
* SPECIAL NOTE: We have a couple pairs of “loaner” boxing gloves available for new students to use when trying out the class, but students are encouraged to get their own gloves as soon as possible.
Classes meet Tue + Thu at 6:15 PM and lasts 60 minutes.
In addition to our classes, we also offer one-on-one and semi-private lessons for all our services. This is an excellent option for people who are looking to expedite their progress, who are unable to make it to the gym during class times or who thrive in an environment where they get undivided individual attention. Whether you are trying to fill some gaps in your Jiu Jitsu, improve your kettlebell lifting technique, or just get an overall great workout, our private lessons are a great way to get the job done.
